Mercedes Steering

If you are turning the wheel of your car while driving and notice that your steering is not as responsive as it used to be, there might be a problem with your front end steering. Front end steering is an important part of what makes your Mercedes top-of-the-line, and when the front end steering doesn’t feel right, the joy of driving just isn’t the same.

Here at Keith Cox Autobahn in Bellingham, Washington, we are experts at Mercedes front end steering. We know that front end steering is an important part of your car’s operating system and have years of expertise in diagnosing loose front end steering.

Front End Steering

Front end steering in your Mercedes is made up of two sections. These selections are the steering and the suspension. If your car is in need of an alignment, you might feel that your suspension is leading you to steer unevenly. The suspension, which is connected to the springs in your car which absorb shock while driving, is also connected to your steering wheel. If that connection is interrupted in any way, your steering might become loose, or unresponsive. Unresponsive or loose steering is a safety hazard that should be addressed by an automotive professional.

Causes of Loose Front End Steering

There can be a few different causes of loose front end steering in your Mercedes car. Some of these include the following:

  • A bad or loose gear: A bad or a loose suspension gear in your vehicle can cause the suspension to let go of the steering. This can cause loose front end steering in your Mercedes that makes it feel like your tires are no longer responding to your steering commands.
  • A loose steering linkage socket: A steering linkage is what keeps your steering tight and taught. If one of these links becomes loose or bad, then your steering will no longer feel stable.
  • Your car needs an alignment: If your car needs an alignment, you will notice a shaking and excessive vibrating at high speeds on the freeway. You might also notice that your steering does not feel connected to the movement of your tires.
  • Old, uneven, and worn tires: When your tires become old, worn out, and bald, they can affect the overall alignment and weight distribution of your car. If this happens, there can be unnecessary pressure put on your gears and linkage sockets, resulting in loose front end steering.
  • Hitting a pothole or large debris: If you hit a pothole, a rock, or large debris in the roadway as you are driving, you should take the time to double check your steering. Hitting something large with your tire can also throw off your vehicle’s entire alignment system which can eventually result in loose and unresponsive front end steering. If you drive a car with four wheel drive, you will want to make sure that both the front end and all wheel steering is tight and responsive after hitting a pothole or debris.

How to Know Your Steering is Loose

If you are turning the wheel of your car and your tires seem to be non-responsive or reacting slowly or minimally, you have a loose front end steering problem in your Mercedes. Mercedes vehicles are known for tight and responsive steering, so if yours feels loose at all this can signify a major steering or alignment problem.

Another good way to know if your steering is loose is to pay attention to whether your car vibrates excessively when traveling at high speeds on the highway. If your car does rumble, this can also be a symptom of loose front end steering.
